“You see, the camera moves around an invisible point completely in 360º, not only horizontally, but in every direction and on every plane of the sphere. Not only does it move in predetermined orbits and spirals but it itself also turns, rolls, and spins. So there are circles within circles and cycles within cycles. Eventually, there’s no gravity.”
—Michael Snow on La Région Centrale
In collaboration with Exploratorium, we are pleased to present an evening of immersive cinema La Région Decentrale (2016): A Prepared Projection Performance for Michael Snow’s La Région Centrale (1971) by Gibson + Recoder.
Crafted from the four reels of Michael Snow’s three-hour masterwork of structuralist cinema La Région Centrale, La Région Decentrale condenses, reframes, and restructures Snow’s work into an expanded cinema experiment. It presents a direct, physical engagement with musings on the mechanics of a medium that suffuses Snow’s work. This program is presented as part of the Canyon Cinema Salon series and the solo exhibition Gibson + Recoder: Powers of Resolution, on view at the Exploratorium from Friday, November 11 through Sunday, December 18, 2016.
Gibson + Recoder: Powers of Resolution is part of the project Lightplay organized by Cinema Arts at the Exploratorium. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
