Jason Halprin joins the Canyon catalog

“My attempt at a City Symphony of Amsterdam, the title is taken from a poorly compiled Dutch-English traveller’s website which said it translated to “Where You Have To Look.” Referring more to the completion of this film than to its shooting, it seemed an appropriate misunderstanding. Having shot Super8 film and recorded audio while on dérives during a short trip to the city for the first time, I found myself with materials I liked, but without a strategy for editing them. I spent two years working with the images and sounds, trying them out in different orders on different mediums without success. Then I remembered that tourism (re-creation?) has always been about learning about your self from the world, and the film became a document of remembrances, a recreation and a tourist’s mindset.”
