As Canyon Cinema prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2011, join us for a special evening of film screenings beneath the redwoods of its birthplace in Canyon, California.

Founded in 1961, Canyon Cinema began as a showcase for experimental cinema in Canyon, California. From those early screenings two distinguished organizations were born, Canyon Cinema and the San Francisco Cinematheque. Through the years Canyon Cinema has emerged as one of the world’s most prominent film distributors. Tonight’s screening is a celebration of the early exhibitions of films shown in 1961 and also showcases films by Canyon Cinema’s past and present day staff and volunteers. Some films to be screened include All My Life by Bruce Baillie, Angel Blue Sweet Wings by Chick Strand and My Name is Oona by Guvnor Nelson.

In the tradition of the founders, the screenings will be preceded by a potluck dinner where you can bring your favorite dish and drinks. Free popcorn will be served during the show, and the coveted Frankie Avalon Suit Award will be given to the most flamboyantly dressed audience member.

Next year we will officially celebrate our golden 50th anniversary, please stay tuned for more information.
