Statement by Canyon Cinema in Response to the Cinemateca Brasileira Fire of July 29, 2021
Posted August 1st, 2021 in News / Events
We, the film community of Canyon Cinema, express our deepest sadness as we watch the images of the fire that devastated the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paolo. For the last year, we have witnessed the systematic decimation of government support for the preservation of this vital, national treasure. From the beginning, Brazilian film has played an enormous role in cinema history. Brazilian directors, actors, and craftspeople have inspired and entertained generations of audiences around the world. By allowing this invaluable aspect of Brazilian culture to burn, the Brazilian government has erased a critical document of their country’s very existence. May this incident spark a new awareness amongst those people who can make a difference in the future of this precious legacy.
