A major figure in experimental cinema, Len Lye was also a renowned kinetic sculptor, an innovative theorist, painter, and writer. He invented the “direct cinema” — facts without film– painting and scratching on film falls back in other films, exposing the film in the shade of various objects, or practicing a number of experimental techniques of color printing. “Since we are able to compose music, it should be possible to compose the movement. After all, there are melodic figures, why would not there be figures of motion?”
