Artist Talk with Carolee Schneemann

Wednesday, November 14, 2012 – 7:30pm
Lecture Hall
Free and open to the public

San Francisco Art Institute
800 Chestnut Street
San Francisco, CA

Over a more than five-decade career, Carolee Schneemann has transformed the definition of art, especially discourse on the body, sexuality, and gender. The history of her work—which spans performance, video, installation, photography, text, and painting—is characterized by research into archaic visual traditions, pleasure wrested from suppressive taboos, and the body of the artist in dynamic relationship to the social body.

Schneemann’s work was featured in On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century at MoMA, New York; other exhibition venues include the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. The retrospective Carolee Schneemann: Within and Beyond the Premises was recently exhibited at the Dorsky Museum of Art, New York; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; and Krannert Museum, Champaign-Urbana. Visit Schneemann’s website at www.caroleeschneemann.com

A solo exhibition of Schneemann’s work runs November 14–December 22, 2012 at Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco.
