Canyon Cinema 50 Call for Writing

Canyon Cinema Foundation seeks original writing on Canyon Cinema’s history, community, and collection of films. The Bay Area nonprofit is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Canyon’s incorporation as an artists cooperative—an organization made by and for filmmakers to distribute their work and share news. As part of its ongoing commitment to support scholarship and critical engagement with artist-made cinema, Canyon is soliciting critical essays and personal reflections to be published on a special CC50 web portal. We are interested in critical profiles of films and filmmakers represented in the collection, especially those featured in the recently announced touring programs.* We also welcome writing that contends with different aspects of Canyon’s organization, operations, and impact—its past and future as a distributor of experimental cinema. We are keen on writing that is insightful, informative, exploratory, speculative, playful, and that otherwise develops from a clear point of view. Essays in the range of 1000-2000 words are encouraged, but we are also open to entertaining submissions outside these parameters if justified. Our hope is that these original texts, taken together, will suggest many different ways of approaching and activating Canyon’s collection at the same time that a selection of its films travels the world. For more information about Canyon Cinema, please visit our website. Scott MacDonald’s book, Canyon Cinema: The Life and Times of an Independent Film Distributor (UC Press) is also an excellent resource on Canyon’s history.

Honoraria are available for published writings. All queries, proposals, and submissions should be mailed to publications@canyoncinema.com. Submissions should be sent as a single document in Word format (.doc or .docx). Publication will be on a rolling basis, but a first round of submissions will be due on January 5, 2018.

*Complete touring program information is available here. Current tour dates are available here, with more being added every day. Previews will be made available for select titles.
