Canyon Cinema is pleased to welcome New York-based artist Gloria Chung to the collection!

Gloria Chung’s films explore places “not down in any map”; liminal places defined by time, light, and memory. Her films have screened at festivals and galleries in the U.S. and internationally. Chung holds degrees from the University of Michigan (BA Anthropology) and University of Chicago (MA Social Sciences) and completed the certificate program at the International Center of Photography. Born in Detroit, she currently lives and works in New York.

Two of Chung’s films are now available from Canyon Cinema, including:

The Photoplay Obeys the Laws of the Mind (2020, 8 minutes, color, sound, digital file)

Using the closest thing we have to time travel – the moving image – to ask questions of time relative to light, motion, and mass. Does light create, prolong, reverse time? Does motion alter our experience of time? Does mass warp our sense of time?

Make Sure the Sea Is Still There (2021, 7.5 minutes, color, sound, digital file)

Traveling vicariously through the webcams of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, I found time and landscapes moving strangely, if at all — seeming to mirror our new reality of sudden isolation, tragedy, and the unknown.
