This film was made in 1995 when many film institutions and organizations were celebrating the (so-called) centennial of cinema. It is a gentle subversion of the pre-1895 work of Muybridge and of Marey. Instead of fragmenting a continuous movement into multiple photographic images representing phases of action, here the movement itself is fragmented and then recorded frame by frame using time exposures and reconstructed into a continuous movement when projected. MOTION STUDIES: NINETY-FIVE consists of Studies No.'s 3 and 2 - with Jennifer Nelson and No. 5 - made with Eduardo Morell. These experiments are the basis of an extended work simply titled Motion Studies.
