Canyon Filmmaker Owen Land (1944-2011)

We are sad to announce that Canyon Cinema’s member filmmaker Owen Land (aka George Landow) has passed away.

From the Art Review website:

“The American filmmaker Owen Land has died, Lux has announced. Born George Landow, the artist was a key in the development of the ‘structural film’ movement, going on to pioneer many of the aesthetic modes common in contemporary artist’s videos, including the use of found footage, text, loops and repetition. This early work is said to have been a direct influcence on Andy Warhol. A screening retrospective in 2005 toured the Rotterdam Film Festival, Tate Modern, Whitney Museum of American Art, Centre Pompidou, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and the Wexner Centre.”

He will be missed among our Canyon community.
