Nomads: Experiments in documentary on 16mm
This tuesday film salon is featuring a selection of documentaries/psuedo-documentaries on 16mm prints from the San Francisco Art Institute Archives. The films were selected in conjunction with SFAI’s international week. Going to be rad!
Rain (1929), directed by Joris Ivens
Rain is a lyrical documentary of a rainy day in amsterdam significant for its aesthetic appeal and impressive cinematography.
Blood of the Beasts (1949), directed by Georges Franju
A canonical, graphic and haunting documentary that juxtaposes the violence of a Parisian slaughterhouse with the mundane landscapes of the surrounding suburbs.
Unsere Afrikareise (1966), directed by Peter Kubelka
Austrian Experimental filmmaker Peter Kubelka transforms footage of a tourist’s African Safari hunt into a structural film.
Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania (1972), directed by Jonas Mekas
Essential American experimental filmmaker Jonas Mekas takes a journey with his brother back to their home village in Lithuania, where they meet up with Peter Kubelka and Herman Nitsch, among other things.
