To Hell and Back is a visual journey through the levels of Hell following the trials and revelations experienced by the film's central character, Video Vic. The story line fuses multiple themes including sex, humor and violence.
The filmmaker constructed 3-D background sets and hand-altered, anatomically correct Barbie dolls that interact with live actors.
In pioneer film animator Max Fleisher's Out of the Inkwell series (c. 1920), an animated cartoon character jumps out of a jar of ink and into a live action film set to cause havoc on the cartoonist's draing board and surroundings. Hell and Back reverses this process as live characters interact directly with animated dolls in an animated environment.
