Canyon Cinema Salon with Sky Hopinka – 5/11/18
Just confirmed! As part of his upcoming trip to the Bay Area, Sky Hopinka will present a Salon with Canyon Cinema on Friday, May 11 at 16 Sherman Street. His recent film Anti-Objects, or Space Without Path or Boundary will screen alongside works from the Canyon catalog by Shirley Clarke, Greta Snider, and Peter Rose.
The Canyon Cinema Salon Series is a FREE event hosted at at 16 Sherman St, off Folsom between 6th and 7th in SOMA.

Bridges-Go-Round by Shirley Clarke (1958, 8 minutes, color, sound)
No-Zone by Greta Snider (1993, 19 minutes, color, sound)
Anti-Objects, or Space Without Path or Boundary by Sky Hopinka (2017, 13 minutes, color, sound)
The Man Who Could Not See Far Enough by Peter Rose (1981, 33 minutes, color, sound)
Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk/Pechanga) was born and raised in Ferndale, Washington and spent a number of years in Palm Springs and Riverside, California, and Portland, Oregon and is currently based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In Portland he studied and taught chinuk wawa, a language indigenous to the Lower Columbia River Basin. His video work centers around personal positions of Indigneous homeland and landscape, designs of language as containers of culture, and the play between the known and the unknowable. He received his BA from Portland State University in Liberal Arts and his MFA in Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
His work has played at various festivals including ImagineNATIVE Media + Arts Festival, Images, Wavelengths, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Sundance, Antimatter, Chicago Underground Film Festival, FLEXfest, and Projections. His work was a part of the 2016 Wisconsin Triennial and the 2017 Whitney Biennial. He was awarded jury prizes at the Onion City Film Festival, the More with Less Award at the 2016 Images Festival, the Tom Berman Award for Most Promising Filmmaker at the 54th Ann Arbor Film Festival, the New Cinema Award at the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival and the Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowship for Individual Artists in the Emerging artist category for 2018.
